Study Design & Causal Reasoning: Applied Clinic

Move beyond identifying study designs to defending a workable research strategy. Eight expanded written lessons develop an evidence-gap brief, an estimand, design comparisons, causal assumptions, bias prevention and a probability-sampling plan. This clinic complements Epidemiological Research Methodology: the emphasis is on applied design decisions, not repeating introductory calculations. Recommended preparation: that course or equivalent knowledge. Each lesson includes a worked fictional case, a concrete planning task and feedback. Allow about 4 hours including practice. Your final output is a design dossier ready for methodological discussion; workshop drafts do not constitute research approval.

Planning & Conducting Public Health Studies

Turn a defensible study design into clear field procedures. Eight expanded written lessons cover sample-to-workload planning, eligibility and recruitment, questionnaire development, translation and pilot testing, consent and community engagement, incident handling, data protection and quality assurance. This is the operational course in the ACES research pathway. Design theory and core epidemiological measures are developed in the companion courses; here you build practical standard operating procedures and a field-readiness dossier. Allow about 4 hours including exercises. Worked examples are fictional. Protocols, consent materials and real data collection require the appropriate local and institutional review.

Evidence Appraisal, Mixed Methods & Research Communication

Learn to judge what evidence can support and communicate it responsibly. Eight expanded written lessons cover results and uncertainty, quantitative appraisal, diagnostic evidence, qualitative inquiry, mixed-method integration, evidence-synthesis planning and decision-focused reporting. This course builds on core epidemiological methods rather than repeating introductory calculations. Worked fictional examples, appraisal exercises, interview-guide practice, a joint display and a final evidence brief develop interpretation and communication skills. Recommended preparation: Epidemiological Research Methodology or equivalent. Allow about 4 hours including exercises. Reporting checklists are used for transparency, not as numerical quality scores. Teaching exercises are not completed systematic reviews or approvals for real research.
